Help the Hyde Amendment to Survive
The Hyde Amendment is not a permanent law — it must be renewed every year in the annual appropriations bill for the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and related agencies. First enacted in 1976, this legislative provision prohibits the use of federal funds to pay for abortions, except in cases of rape, incest, or danger to the woman's life. It has been reauthorized every year since its introduction.
